It has snowed again overnight and it was lovely and sunny today, so I grabbed my camera and managed to take some decent pictures for once. ( A few pics of the snow-covered Westphalian landscape. )

Happy New Year everybody! I had a lovely night with friends, fondue, and fireworks (not our own; we watched everybody elses). The cat was under the bed the whole time, poor bunny. Our neighbour's dogs freak out even worse, except for his trained hunting dog who gets all "Yay, where's the action?!" when she hears loud bangs. Anyway, I'm not a fan of fireworks because, well, I always had pets... but last night, with the new layer of snow that reflected the colors of the fireworks, was pretty. Then we went back inside and on the internet to show each other our fave YouTube clips. :D
fic recs!
Heart and Soul by Santa
gen; Teyla (POV) and Rodney, plus John, Ronon, Jennifer; G; 2,800 words
Summary: "You think there's something going on with McKay?"
Friendship fic with well-drawn characters. Another fave from secret Santa.
Siege tag by
friendshipper
gen - John w/Rodney and a little Zelenka; 1300 wds.
A missing scene that really conveys that sense of exhaustion. Great character moment.
Promptfic 1: Rodney, fire by
friendshipper
"Short straw," Sheppard said cheerfully. "McKay gets to build the fire."
next up: Big Bang recs for real
fanart recs:
Elizabeth Weir (AU) by
aretria
A successful mix of painting and manip
And
ratcreature drew a Santa!Cthulhu
If you'd like to start the new year with a bit of headdesking, here's a link I found via
mecurtin: How Not to Advertise on the Internet
Here's an LJ-themed cartoon that cracked me up. I finally thought of adding xkcd to my LJ feeds.

Take a picture of yourself RIGHT NOW.
Don't change your clothes. Don't fix your hair. Just take a picture.
Post that picture with no editing.
Post these instructions with your picture.
( This is me in my pj's at 11am on a cloudy NYE! )

Hm,
selenak just rec'd a yuletide Twin Peaks fic. I have a bunch of SGA fic printed and ready-to-read but I might squeeze that one in first. I had a quite obsessive love for TP, the only reason I wasn't in the fandom was that I didn't know about fandom. Or the internet.
I'm about to head off to the gym. Man, I've waited four long days to say that. I'm really not a fan of public holidays, especially several in a row. On the 25th it was raining all day and *everthing* was closed so we were stuck inside the house all day. (At least I finally got my portfolios sorted through). On the 26th I put on my rollerblades and made my way through icy sludge, gravel, and salt water but after a mile I gave up, came back and put on my running shoes. Running was also kind of adventurous with all the remaining icy patches. Yesterday I had a pleasant birthday with an extensive brunch and a trip to the climbing center. It really helped me over the whole turning 40 thing to climb two mean-ass routes with overhangs that I've never mastered before. \o/
Saw this linked on my flist: The 40 Worst Rob Liefeld Drawings
Warning: awful art inside (Awfully sexist too)
This induced giggles as well as rage. I admit, it really pisses me off that an artist with so little grasp of anatomy and, well, everything else, has a successfull career and makes millions of bucks while countless artists who could kick his ass on the drawing front have to struggle to make a living.

Yuletide rec:
Fearful Symmetry by Anonymous (fandom: Back to the Future)
gen; Marty McFly, Emmett Brown; 4,839 words
Saw this rec'd by Friendshipper and enjoyed it muchly. I loved the movie (Time travel! 'nuff said) and this story has got a good handle one the whole time travel (pseudo)science. It makes the whacky physics of the movie actually appear more plausible. And I really like where she went with Marty's character.
I haven't even got around to writing all the sga_santa recs. And I got two must-rec Big Bangs. *flails* Okay, for starters:
More SGA Santa Fic Wot I Liked:
Never Quite What You Expect
John/Rodney, Teyla, Ronon; PG; ~7400
Summary: The problem with most of the ways it could happen is that the scenarios aren't nearly awkward enough.
Author's Notes: "I threw a number of monanotlisa's requests at the wall, and "twisted cliches", "banter", and "humor" stuck the fastest. Hope you enjoy it!"
Twisted cliches, check. Banter, check. Humor, check check. Mixed together with great result. :)
(Plus, it's only a side detail in the story, but I'm loving this fic so much more for getting Jennifer right and not buying into certain fanon cliches.)
Villa Triste
Gen, slightly McKay/Keller; R for violence and torture; 2800 words
Summary: McKay is captured and held for ransom.
Sparesly yet effectively written. Fic focussing on torture is generally not my thing, but this one worked for me.
Are You Naked Under That Thing?
Gen; John, Rodney; h/c; 1,300 words
Rating: PG
Summary: "I'm here because I received a phone call at midnight from Jennifer, who, by the way, works at the damn hospital where they'd taken you, telling me that you'd been seriously hurt, so I get halfway to the hospital when she calls and tells me you'd checked yourself out. And here you are, at home, in your..." He frowned. "Are you naked under that thing?"
I like the idea that years from now they will still be friends who care about each other, relationship breakups notwithstanding.
